The great virtues ( reflections on leadership)

Honesty

staggered, stammered, sweated profusely

And left the room

Bewildered and confused.

Integrity

abandoned hope

Amidst braying, raucous cheers

Feeling lonely somehow,

Sad and muted

even though surrounded by peers,

It too was dazed, dismayed

and ultimately

Abused.

Compassion

Was found wanting,

Spoken of

Often

But practiced

Little

Found to be too daunting,

Contrition

Was deemed unnecessary and

capable of haunting

Conscience…the ultimate inconvenience.

Kindness

Was left crippled by greed, avarice

The endless oiling of the greasy pole

Rendered it empty and unwhole.

Tolerance

Was stretched to breaking point

Mostly seen as weakness.

Best not to indulge oneself with

Emotions, even actions involving

Mercifulness or meekness.

Vote for

Powerfulness

Selfishness

Those at the top of tree.

Don’t trouble us with

Peacefulness

Togetherness

Harmlessness

Harmony or

Humility.

I’m too busy

Too clever

Too sarcastic and sardonic

Too big for my boots

To give a hoot

For you

For them

“The unholy and unwashed”.

Aspirations dashed?

Leave me, I’m afraid,

unabashed.

Sorrow?

Regret?

Remorse?

No chance!

There’s only

Mine

I want it

I’ll have it.

Talk of virtues?

Carry On!

I’ll be focused

Exclusively

With Me

That’s Me

Yes!

There’s only ever

Me.
